Members of the PIT-CNT labor union and the UNOTT transport workers union are slated to strike for 24 hours starting on Tuesday, June 25, in Montevideo. As a result of the strike, public transportation, taxi services, education services, and government offices will be either canceled or closed. The strike comes days before presidential primary elections scheduled on Sunday, June 30.
Massive transportation and commercial disruptions are expected during the strike and associated demonstrations are also possible. A heightened security presence is expected near all protests. Clashes between demonstrators and security forces cannot be ruled out.
Individuals in Montevideo are advised to monitor the situation, avoid all public demonstrations as a precaution, anticipate system-wide transportation disruptions and a heightened security presence in the vicinity of all protests, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities.
