Residents in the town of Nahuala (Sololá department) conducted a protest on Monday, June 24, closing the central highway and causing traffic disruptions. Related protests were also held in Guatemala City in the Plaza de la Constitution, which caused road closures in the capital. These protests were to demand a government response to solving a territorial dispute with a nearby municipality, Santa María Ixtahuacán.
Further related protests are expected in the coming days. Associated transportation disruptions and a heightened security presence are expected in the vicinity of the protests.
Individuals traveling in Guatemala City and Nahuala (Sololá) area are advised to avoid all protests as a precaution, monitor the situation, allow ample travel time, and obey instructions issued by the local authorities.
