The Aar Li Nu Bokk civil society group has called for demonstrations across Senegal on Friday, June 28, to denounce President Macky Sall's alleged involvement in a petroleum sector corruption scandal and to call for greater transparency in the government's efforts to exploit the country's natural resources. The Aar Sunu Rew civil society group is expected to hold counterprotests in Dakar and other urban centers on the same day.
A heightened security presence and localized traffic disruptions are to be anticipated near all protest sites. Clashes between protesters and between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out. Similar protests are possible over the coming weeks.
Aar Li Nu Bokk has previously staged anti-government demonstrations on June 14 and 21. At least 17 people were wounded in clashes between police and protesters on June 14.
Individuals in Dakar are advised to monitor the situation, avoid any public demonstrations as a precaution, and anticipate localized traffic disruptions and a heightened security presence near demonstration sites.
