The national weather service Météo France issued orange heatwave alerts on Thursday, June 27, for 78 departments throughout the country, including the Paris region. The warnings are currently set to remain in place until 06:00 (local time) on Friday, June 28. The heatwave is expected to bring temperatures as high as 40°C (104°F) with nightly lows not sinking below 20°C (68°F). All regions of France are forecast to be affected with the exception of Brittany; the hottest weather will extend from the Pyrenees to Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes.

This extreme heat also increases the likelihood of railway fires, resulting in train delays, as trains are forced to operate at lower speeds for safety reasons. Train cancellations should also be anticipated.

Meteorologists predict above average temperatures through August.

Individuals in France are advised to monitor local weather reports, avoid strenuous activities or spending time outdoors, particularly during midday, wear loose-fitting clothing, drink plenty of water and avoid dehydrating liquids, such as alcoholic, sugary, or caffeinated drinks, and seek immediate medical attention if exhibiting symptoms of heat stroke, such as nausea, confusion, headache, rapid and strong pulse, and dry skin. Travelers are advised to allow additional time when travelling by train.
