Officials announced on Tuesday, June 25, that construction work planned for the main runway at Rio de Janeiro's Santos Dumont Airport (SDU) is now postponed indefinitely. The work was originally scheduled to take place from Monday, August 12, through Thursday, September 12, 2019. The delays are due to authorities banning the use of the secondary runway by turbojet aircraft, which would prevent the landing and takeoff of key aircraft, implying the suspension of main commercial operations of the airport. The repairs will only take place after the necessary adjustments to the secondary runway are made, which will be determined at a later date.
Departure and arrival airports may therefore change. All LATAM flights were originally scheduled to operate into and out of Galeao International Airport (GIG) during the construction period.
Individuals with plans to travel via SDU and GIG in the next several weeks are advised to contact their airlines to confirm their flight reservations and departure/arrival location.
