Event

Protesters in Bamako set fire to makeshift barricades amid protests in the Badalabougou area to denounce the installation of the G5 Sahel headquarters in the capital on Friday, July 5. Security forces reportedly fired tear gas to disperse the crowds after several protesters threw projectiles at police.

A heightened security presence and localized traffic disruptions are to be expected near the protest site over the coming hours.

Context

Demonstrators frequently stage protests in the Badalabougou area of Bamako to denounce the move of the G5 Sahel headquarters to Bamako. The move comes after the former G5 Sahel headquarters in Mopti was attacked in June 2018. Some protesters argue the relocation of the headquarters to the capital is likely to attract militant activity to the area.

Advice

Individuals in Bamako are advised to monitor developments, avoid all protests and demonstrations as a precaution, remain vigilant for militant activity, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.
