Event

Striking members of the Federal Police have planned a protest march in Mexico City on Monday, July 8. The march will begin at the Ángel de la Independencia at 05:00 to 07:00 (local time) before departing for the Zócalo. Associated transportation disruptions are expected along the route.

Context

Federal Police officers have been resisting attempts to merge them into a National Guard, a newly formed security force aimed at tackling organized crime and other national security matters, by holding strikes and staging protests in Mexico City and other parts of the country. Protesting officers claim they are being threatened with pay cuts or firings if they do not join the new force.

Advice

Individuals in Mexico City, and Mexico more generally, are advised to monitor the situation, avoid public demonstrations as a precaution, and anticipate localized transportation disruptions and further strike and protest activity in the near term.
