Increased activity at the Popocatepetl volcano in central Mexico has prompted authorities to place the volcano under a Yellow Phase 2 warning on Sunday, July 7, though predict a Yellow Phase 3 alert to be applied soon. The volcano emitted water vapor, gases, ash, and incandescent material, and authorities recorded 22 exaltations, two low-intensity explosions, and a total of 70 minutes of tremors.

Evacuation routes in nearby towns and cities are being examined in case they may have to be used. Ash is predicted to fall in Tláhuac, Xochimilco, Tlalpan, Iztapalapa, Coyoacán, Milpa Alta, and Magdalena Contreras.

Advice

Individuals present in the affected area are advised to avoid the vicinity of the volcano, monitor the situation, adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities (e.g. evacuation orders), and wear respiratory masks and covering clothing to protect skin from ashfall.
