Rickshaw drivers to continue protesting nationwide on July 11; heightened security measures and transportation disruptions expected

Rickshaw drivers in Bangladesh plan to protest outside Jatiya Press Club on Tophkana Road in Dhaka on Thursday, July 11, to demand that the authorities remove the ban on rickshaws in three major streets. Participants did not immediately announce an exact time. Severe transportation disruptions around the protest site is to be expected, along with a heightened security presence.


Rickshaw drivers blocked several major roads in the capital, Dhaka, on July 8 and July 9, to protest the ban on rickshaws on three main roads. At least 3000 people participated on each day causing severe traffic disruptions. Protesters have threatened to increase their industrial action unless the authorities lift the ban by Thursday, July 11.


Individuals in Bangladesh, particularly in Dhaka, are advised to monitor the situation, avoid all protests, and anticipate a heightened security presence and transportation disruptions near any protest sites.
