Event

The President of the National Constitutional Assembly called for a protest to take place in Caracas on Saturday, July 13, against a recently published United Nations Human Rights report on the country by Commissioner Michelle Bachelet. The call was put out to mobilize those who find the contents of the report unjust.

The date and time of the protest were not immediately available, though it is likely that various groups will plan several smaller protests throughout the city.

Protests in other metropolitan areas are possible. Additional related demonstrations are to be expected over the coming weeks. Associated transportation and commercial disruptions and a heightened security presence are likely near all protests.

Context

On July 4, the UN Human Rights Office of the High Commissioner released a report on Venezuela highlighting what it identifies as several grave rights violations concerning abuse of state power, torture, and justice, among other issues. Officials interviewed victims of state violence within and outside the country.

Advice

Individuals in Caracas are advised to monitor the situation, avoid all public demonstrations as a precaution, anticipate localized disruptions, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities.
