An informal meeting of EU environment ministers will be held in the capital Helsinki from Wednesday, July 10, through Friday, July 12. Police officials announced that increased security measures will be in affect in Helsinki and Vantaa during the conference, particularly at the event venue at Finlandia Hall and Helsinki-Vantaa Airport (HEL). Roads between the venue and HEL will be blocked on Wednesday from 14:00-23:39 (local time) and from 14:00-19:00 on Friday to allow guests to travel to and from the airport. Public transportation disruptions in the Helsinki city center and bicycle and pedestrian traffic restrictions will also be in effect during the meetings. A heightened security presence is expected throughout the capital, particularly in the city center, as well as an increased demand for hotels. Further information on associated restrictions can be found on the Helsinki police website.
Individuals in Helsinki and Vantaa during the meeting are advised to keep abreast of the situation, maintain flexible itineraries, allow additional time to travel, and obey all instructions issued by the local authorities. Travelers flying to or from HEL are advised to anticipate a heightened security presence and significant traffic disruptions around the airport.
