Civil society groups and the Aar Li Nu Bokk opposition coalition have called for a demonstration in Dakar on Friday, July 12, to denounce President Macky Sall's alleged involvement in a petroleum sector corruption scandal and to call for greater transparency in government efforts to exploit the country's natural resources. Protesters are expected to gather in front of the Amadou Barry stadium, located in the Guediawaye district of Dakar, from 15:00 to 18:00 (local time). Related protests may be held in other urban centers.
A heightened security presence and localized traffic disruptions are to be anticipated near all protest sites. Clashes between protesters, as well as between protesters and security forces, cannot be ruled out. Similar protests are possible over the coming weeks.
Aar Li Nu Bokk has staged weekly anti-government demonstrations since June 14. At least 17 people were wounded in clashes between police and protesters on June 14.
Individuals in Dakar are advised to monitor the situation, avoid any public demonstrations as a precaution, and anticipate localized traffic disruptions and a heightened security presence near demonstration sites.
