Event

The US National Weather Service has issued a flash flood emergency for New Orleans (Louisiana state) on Wednesday, July 10, effective until 13:45 (local time). A flash flood emergency is also in effect for Metairie, Kenner, and Marrero until 11:45. The National Weather Service has advised individuals in the affected areas to move immediately to high ground as there is a severe threat to human life and catastrophic damage from flash flooding is likely.

Parts of New Orleans' French Quarter were flooded on Wednesday and City Hall has been closed to nonessential employees. Significant transportation and business disruptions are to be expected in the New Orleans area over the coming hours.

Advice

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to immediately move to high ground, monitor developments, prepare for lingering disruptions, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities. Remember that walking or driving through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain chemical products and wastewater; all items having come into contact with floodwater should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded.
