Russia News Alert

Police detain some 45 protesters in Moscow July 11; similar demonstrations possible over the coming days and weeks

TIMEFRAME expected from 7/10/2019, 11:00 PM until 7/14/2019, 10:59 PM (Europe/Moscow). COUNTRY/REGION Moscow

Police officers reportedly detained some 45 protesters in Moscow on Thursday, July 11, outside the Supreme Court building. Dozens rallied in Moscow to denounce perceived attempts by the Russian government to repress the rights of Crimean Tatars in Ukraine's Russian-occupied Crimea. Several protesters were also detained at Red Square amid a related demonstration on Wednesday, July 10. The latest demonstrations come as several Crimean Tatars were sentenced to lengthy prison terms in June on terrorism charges.

Similar protests are possible in Moscow over the coming days and weeks amid a heightened security presence. Localized traffic disruptions are to be expected around demonstrations.

Individuals in Moscow are advised to avoid all public demonstrations due to the risk of arrest, refrain from discussing political subjects in public or on social media, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, and anticipate localized disruptions near any protest sites.
