Pakistan: Train collision in Rahim Yar Khan leaves 15 dead July 11

Pakistan News Alert

At least 15 dead and more than 70 injured in a train collision on July 11; disruptions on rail network likely

TIMEFRAME expected from 7/11/2019, 12:00 AM until 7/12/2019, 11:59 PM (Asia/Karachi). COUNTRY/REGION Rahim Yar Khan

Event

At least 15 people were killed and more than 70 others were injured in a train collision on Thursday morning (local time), July 11, near the town of Rahim Yar Khan (Punjab province). The Akbar Express passenger train was reportedly diverted onto the incorrect track and collided with a stationary freight train at Walhar railway station. Residual delays should be expected as officials carry out rescue operations and attempt to clear the track over the coming hours and days.

Context

Train accidents (including collisions and derailments) are not uncommon in Pakistan. The country's colonial-era railway network has fallen into disrepair in recent decades due to chronic underinvestment and poor maintenance.

Advice

Individuals in the Rahim Yar Khan area and those planning on traveling on the affected rail lines are advised to prepare for continued transportation disruptions and to adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.

As a reminder, Western governments advise their citizens against all nonessential travel to Pakistan, due to a high threat from terrorism, kidnapping, and sectarian violence throughout the country. Individuals who must travel in Pakistan are advised to avoid all forms of public transportation, such as trains, taxis, and buses.
