Afghanistan: Suicide bombing kills five, wounds 40 others in Nangarhar province July 12

Afghanistan News Alert

Suicide bombing kills at least five people, wounds 40 others in Pachir Aw Agam district (Nangarhar province) July 12; no group immediately claims responsibility for attack

TIMEFRAME expected from 7/12/2019, 12:00 AM until 7/14/2019, 11:59 PM (Asia/Kabul). COUNTRY/REGION Pachir Aw Agam district (Nangarhar province)

A suicide bombing attack killed at least five people and wounded 40 others at a wedding party in Pachir Aw Agam district (Nangarhar province) on Friday, July 12. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack; Islamic State (IS) militants, however, have carried out a series of attacks in the province in recent years and may be responsible for Friday's assault.

Similar militant attacks are possible in Nangarhar province over the near term.

Taliban and Islamic State (IS) militants launch attacks on government personnel, security forces, and civilians in Afghanistan on a near-daily basis. Such assaults are, in part, intended to undermine the perceived capacity of Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) - and the Afghan government more broadly - to adequately provide security in the wake of the withdrawal of most US-led NATO forces from the country.

Individuals in Afghanistan are advised to monitor developments to the situation, remain vigilant for militant activity, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities or their home governments.

The security environment in Afghanistan remains complex. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
