Libya: Attack on power plant in Tripoli leads to water shortage July 12

Libya News Alert

Attack on power plant in Tripoli leads to suspension of water supply in the capital and central region July 12; continuing water shortage likely over the coming hours and days

TIMEFRAME expected from 7/12/2019, 12:00 AM until 7/15/2019, 11:59 PM (Africa/Tripoli). COUNTRY/REGION Tripoli

An armed group attacked a power plant in Tripoli on Friday, July 12, forcing power to be cut to wells in Tripoli and causing a consequent water shortage in the capital and central region of the country. The unidentified group reportedly carried out the attack to demand the restoration of power to areas in southern Libya which suffered a power cut days ago.

The water shortage is expected to continue in Tripoli and surrounding areas over the coming hours and days until a resolution is reached between the parties.

Individuals in Tripoli and other affected areas are advised to monitor the situation, stockpile bottled and other potable water, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities and their home governments.

The security environment in Libya remains complex. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
