Car bomb explosion leaves one wounded in Mogadishu July 17; no group immediately claims responsibility for the blast

TIMEFRAME expected from 7/17/2019, 12:00 AM until 7/18/2019, 11:59 PM (Africa/Mogadishu). COUNTRY/REGION Mogadishu

A car bomb exploded outside Waberi police station on Mogadishu's Makka Al-Mukarama Road on Wednesday, July 17, wounding at least one person. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the blast.

Similar attacks are to be expected in Mogadishu over the near term.

Al-Shabaab continues to exercise effective control over large zones in the south and center of Somalia and attacks from the group are frequent across the country, including in Mogadishu. The group often targets government officials and military infrastructure in a bid to topple the West- and UN-backed government and impose its own strict interpretation of Islam in Somalia.

Individuals in Mogadishu are advised to monitor developments, remain vigilant for militant activity, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.

The security environment in Somalia remains complex. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
