Russia News Alert

Protest calling for free and fair elections planned in St. Petersburg July 24; heightened security presence expected

TIMEFRAME expected from 7/17/2019, 11:00 PM until 7/24/2019, 10:59 PM (Europe/Moscow). COUNTRY/REGION St. Petersburg

The Beautiful Petersburg civil society group has called for a protest to be held in St. Petersburg on Wednesday, July 24, to call for free and fair elections scheduled for September. Protesters are expected to gather at 19:00 (local time) at Lenin square.

A heightened security presence is likely around the demonstration site; clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out. Further protests are likely in the coming days and weeks in St. Petersburg and Moscow.

Similar protests were held on July 14-15 in Moscow following a decision by the Moscow City Election Committee to exclude opposition candidates from the September 8 city council election.

Individuals in St. Petersburg are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all protests as a precaution, and obey all instructions issued by the local authorities.
