Event

A detonated vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) killed one in the Qadam area in Damascus on Monday, July 22. The attack reportedly targeted a high official from the National Defense Forces (NDF), killing his driver. The Islamic State (IS) terrorist group later claimed the attack.

Similar attacks are possible in Damascus over the near term.

Context

To date, the Syrian conflict involves many parties, including the Syrian government, the Russian government, the Iranian government, the Turkish government, a US-led coalition, and numerous armed groups on the ground (including the Islamic State) with competing goals
