A wildfire which ignited in Castelo Branco district on Saturday, July 20, has been brought under control as of Tuesday, July 23. The fire injured at least 39 people and destroyed dozens of houses; in total, some 8500 hectares (21,000 acres) were burned over the weekend of July 20-21.
Over 1000 firefighters remain deployed in smoldering areas to prevent the further spread of the fire amid continuing high temperatures, strong winds, and low humidity. Lingering transportation and business disruptions are to be expected in fire-affected areas. Similar wildfires are possible in Portugal over the coming weeks.
Individuals in Portugal are advised to monitor developments, exercise caution when traveling in areas near wildfires, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities (e.g. evacuation orders).
