Event

Shelling on regime-held neighborhoods in Aleppo killed at least seven people and wounded 20 others on Monday, July 22. While state-run media did not immediately blame a specific group for the attacks on Al-Jamelaiah and Hamdaniya districts, the shelling reportedly originated from west of the city in Al-Rashideen district - an area where Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham militants are known to be active.

Similar shelling attacks are to be expected in regime-held areas in northern Syria over the coming weeks.

Context

To date, the Syrian conflict involves many parties, including the Syrian government, the Russian government, the Iranian government, the Turkish government, a US-led coalition, and numerous armed groups on the ground (including the Islamic State) with competing goals.

Advice

Due to extremely poor security conditions, Western governments generally advise against all travel to Syria, with some banning travel to the country. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to any travel to Syria.
