Pernambuco state officials declared an emergency situation on Wednesday, July 24, after days of heavy rains caused deadly flooding and landslides throughout the state. At least 11 people have been killed as of Wednesday in Recife, Olinda, and Abreu e Lima. Several homes have been destroyed and over 100 people have been forced to evacuate. Major roads in Olinda, northern Recife, Igarassu, and other parts of the state have also been damaged or blocked. Search and rescue operations are ongoing as of Wednesday night. Associated commercial and transportation disruptions are expected to continue over the coming days. Additional rain is forecast in the area through Friday, July 26.
Individuals in Pernambuco state are advised to monitor local weather reports, anticipate flooding, landslides, heavy rain, and associated transportation, power, telecommunication, business, and government disruptions, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities (e.g. evacuation orders). Be advised that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products; all items having come into contact should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded.
