Labor rights protest to be held in Sidon July 30; heightened security presence and associated transportation disruptions likely

Civil society groups representing members of the Palestinian refugee community and supporters are slated to hold a protest march in Sidon on Tuesday, July 30. Protesters will reportedly march from Martyrs Square to Nejmeh Square from 19:00 (local time) to denounce perceived attempts by the Ministry of Labor to regulate the country's unlicensed foreign workforce. 

Localized disruptions, including a heightened security presence and transportation disruptions, are to be expected in Sidon.  

Context

The Lebanese government introduced new labor laws in June requiring companies to acquire work permits for foreign workers. The move sparked protests in Beirut on July 16, as hundreds of Palestinians rallied against the regulation.
