Argentina News Alert

Protests against President Macri reported nationwide July 30; further protests likely

TIMEFRAME expected from 7/31/2019, 12:00 AM until 8/13/2019, 11:59 PM (America/Argentina/Buenos_Aires). COUNTRY/REGION Argentina, Buenos Aires

Argentinians in 17 cities and towns held protests on Tuesday, July 30, against President Mauricio Macri and an ongoing food crisis under the slogan "hunger is not an election." Protesters sought to denounce the 50 percent rise in food prices over the last year and to call attention to the issue during the ongoing campaign period.

The protests take place just two weeks before the scheduled primary elections on Tuesday, August 13, in which President Macri is up for reelection.

Transportation disruptions were reported in these locations, with the largest protest in Buenos Aires. Further anti-government protests are likely across the country as candidates continue campaigning and voters take to the voting booth for the primary election.

Individuals in Argentina, though especially in Buenos Aires, are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all protests as a precaution, and obey all instructions issued by the local authorities.
