Sierra Leone: Flash flooding leaves five dead in Freetown August 2

Sierra Leone News Alert

Flash flooding leaves at least five people dead in Freetown August 2; further flooding possible amid additional forecast rainfall

TIMEFRAME expected from 8/2/2019, 12:00 AM until 8/4/2019, 11:59 PM (Africa/Freetown). COUNTRY/REGION Freetown

Flash flooding left at least five people dead in Freetown on Friday, August 2, and caused significant material damages as homes and vehicles were inundated. Consequent transportation and business disruptions are to be expected in the capital over the coming hours.

Additional rainfall is forecast to affect Freetown over the coming days, which may result in further flooding and associated disruptions.

Individuals in Freetown are advised to monitor local weather reports, avoid areas directly affected by flooding, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities (e.g. evacuation orders), and confirm road conditions before setting out. It is important to note that walking or driving through floodwaters can be dangerous; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
