Flooding in Abuja has left one presumed dead and several injured as of Monday, August 5, and heavy rain and further flooding is forecast to continue through the end of the week. Authorities in Abuja have blocked roads to prevent motorists from driving in the heavily affected areas around Galadinmawa, Lokogama, and the Area One junction. In Oguta (Imo state), heavy rains and flooding have reportedly displaced at least 2000 people. Officials in Kaduna State have warned that the Kaduna River may overflow and have asked people close to the river to relocate due to possible flooding.
Heavy rains and flooding are expected to continue over the coming days. Associated disruptions, including transportation disruptions, are likely in affected areas.
Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, avoid areas directly affected by flooding, confirm road conditions and flight reservations before setting out, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
