Event

At least 13 people were wounded in an alleged case of gang violence targeting civilians in Mombasa on Monday, August 5. Local sources indicate assailants armed with machetes indiscriminately attacked residents in the Bamburi Mwisho, Kwa Bulo, Bombolulu, and Kisimani areas. The government has reportedly deployed multiple law enforcement agencies to the area to target the gang responsible for the attack. Further such violence and a heightened security presence are to be anticipated in Mombasa over the coming days and weeks.

Advice

Individuals in Kenya, particularly in the abovementioned area, are advised to remain vigilant, to follow instructions issued by local authorities, and take security precautions (e.g. keep signs of wealth concealed, drive with doors locked and windows rolled up, avoid walking alone, avoid traveling in isolated urban areas at night, etc.). As criminals are often armed, do not attempt to resist would-be attackers or thieves and give up all demanded objects to avoid escalating the situation.
