Reports indicate on Monday, August 5, that hundreds of families were evacuated due to severe flooding in parts of Phu Quoc over the weekend. Media reports indicate that rainfall of over 200 mm (7.9 in) were recorded over three days. People resorted to travel by canoes and small boats due to the high waters.
Duong Dong Town experienced the most flooding and power was cut from some of its neighborhoods for safety purposes.
Flooding is expected to continue, with rain in the forecast over the next few days, causing transportation disruptions, adverse driving conditions, and multiple road closures in the affected areas.
Individuals in the affected areas are advised to keep abreast of local weather forecasts, anticipate flooding along with transportation disruptions, and adhere to any instructions issued by local authorities.
Be advised that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products; all items having come into contract with the water should be disinfected and all food discarded.
