A group of unknown individuals have petrol bombed the offices of Malawi Congress Party's Vice President Sidik Mia in Blantyre (Southern Region) on Friday, August 9. The incident was reported around 02:00 (local time), and by the time firefighters responded to the call, the property had already sustained significant damage. No injuries were immediately reported.
A heightened security presence is possible in the vicinity of the incident.
This incident comes several days after the Malawi Congress Party offices were set alight in Blantyre on July 21.
Political tensions in Malawi are high due to continuous election-related demonstrations organized by opposition supporters since May 26 after voting irregularities were reported during the May 21 general elections. Protesters have notably criticized Jane Ansah, chairperson of the Malawi Electoral Commission, and call for her resignation after she was accused of mishandling the presidential elections.
Individuals in Blantyre are advised to monitor the situation, avoid the area, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities.
