A wildfire has engulfed some 1000 hectares (2500 acres) on Gran Canaria and forced the evacuation of several towns on the island as of Sunday, August 11, ousting some 1000 people from their homes. The blaze reportedly ignited on Saturday, August 10; one man has been arrested on suspicion of starting the fire, which is burning some 32 km (20 mi) southwest of Las Palmas.

Forecast dry conditions may assist the spread of the fire over the coming days. Transportation and business disruptions are to be expected in affected areas.
