Event

Clashes between Syrian government-aligned forces and militant and allied fighters left at least 70 dead in northwestern Syria on Saturday, August 10. The fighting reportedly took place in northern Hama province, southern Idlib province, and rural parts of Latakia province.

Further fighting is to be expected between the sides in northwestern Syria over the near term.

Context

To date, the Syrian conflict involves many parties, including the Syrian government, the Russian government, the Iranian government, the Turkish government, a US-led coalition, and numerous armed groups on the ground (including the Islamic State) with competing goals.
