The death toll from a landslide in Thaton district (Mon state) which took place on Friday, August 9, has risen to 53 as of Sunday evening (local time), August 11. The count may rise over the coming days as the rescue operation continues; some 29 people remained missing as of Sunday. The landslide reportedly came amid heavy monsoon rainfall that has recently affected the region. The rainfall has also damaged highways, hindering recovery efforts and causing lingering transportation disruptions.
Further heavy rainfall is forecast to affect Mon state over the coming days and may exacerbate flooding and cause additional landslides. Lingering transportation and business disruptions are to be expected in areas significantly affected by consequent flooding and landslides.
Individuals in Mon state are advised to monitor local weather reports, avoid the area of the landslide, prepare for transportation and business disruptions, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
