Event

Student groups and trade unions, including the National Education Confederation (CNTE) and the Federation of Technical and Administrative Workers Unions in Public Higher Education Institutes of Brazil (FASUBRA), plan to hold demonstrations and strikes throughout the country on Tuesday, August 13, to protest education budget cuts and Social Security reforms. In São Paulo, protesters will gather outside of the Museum of Art São Paulo at 16:00 (local time) on Tuesday. Other protest locations and times were not immediately announced, but similar demonstrations, strikes, and work stoppages are expected to take place in urban centers nationwide. Government officials announced on Thursday, August 8, that the National Force was authorized to take action against protests on August 13.

A heightened security presence and transportation disruptions, such as road closures and traffic delays, are likely around demonstrations. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Individuals in Brazil, particularly in urban centers, are advised to monitor the situation, avoid all public demonstrations as a precaution, anticipate localized disruptions, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities.
