Haiti News Alert

Opposition leaders call for anti-government protests in Port-au-Prince August 14, 22, 23; heightened security presence and localized transportation disruptions expected

TIMEFRAME expected from 8/12/2019, 12:00 AM until 8/23/2019, 11:59 PM (America/Port-au-Prince). COUNTRY/REGION Port-au-Prince

Event

Opposition leader Jean-Charles Moïse announced on Monday, August 5, that renewed anti-government protests calling for the resignation of President Jovenel Moïse would take place in Port-au-Prince on Wednesday, August 14, Thursday, August 22, and Friday, August 23. Times and locations of protests were not immediately announced; past protests have taken place in front of the US Embassy, the Parliament of Haiti, and the National Palace. Other likely protest venues are main squares and roads in Port-au-Prince, such as Place Jean-Jacques Dessalines, Route de Delmas, and Boulevard Toussaint Louverture.

A heightened security presence and transportation disruptions, such as road closures and delays, are to be expected around demonstration sites. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out.

Context

Numerous demonstrations have been staged in recent months to call for greater government transparency after several public officials, including President Jovenel Moïse, were implicated in a scandal related to the alleged misuse of PetroCaribe funds.

Advice

Individuals in Port-au-Prince are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all protests and demonstrations as a precaution, anticipate localized transportation disruptions, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities.
