A demonstration was reported around the Nigerian High Commission in New Delhi on Wednesday, August 14, with protesters demanding the release of Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) leader Ibrahim el-Zakzaky. On Tuesday, August 13, el-Zakzaky reportedly landed in India to seek medical treatment after he was recently granted bail in Nigeria.

A heightened security presence and localized traffic disruptions are to be expected near the site. Similar protests are possible in New Delhi over the coming hours and days.

IMN leader Ibrahim el-Zakzaky, a prominent Shi'a cleric, was arrested in December 2015 when soldiers raided his home in Zaria (Kaduna state), killing a number of IMN followers in the process. The Nigerian Federal High Court ordered Zakzaky's release in December 2016, but he has remained in detention.

Individuals in New Delhi are advised to monitor the situation, avoid all protests and demonstrations, and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities.
