A group of armed fighters attacked the Defense Services Technological Academy in Pyin Oo Lwin (Shan state) in the early morning (local time) on Thursday, August 15, leaving at least one dead. The Northern Alliance, a coalition of ethnic insurgent groups, claimed responsibility for the attack. This attack comes amid a series of recent attacks and clashes in the area between armed ethnic groups and the Burmese military. Railways and roads between the towns of Pyin Oo Lwin and Nawnghkio (Shan state) have been closed as a result of recent attacks, and the US State Department issued a warning on Thursday to avoid travel in the area.

Further attacks and violent clashes between armed groups and security forces in Shan state and neighboring Mandalay region are to be expected over the coming days and weeks.

Individuals in Shan state are advised to monitor developments to the situation, remain vigilant for militant and military activity, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities and their home governments.
