4.2-magnitude earthquake near South Hutchinson (Kansas state) causes minor damages August 16; aftershocks possible over the coming hours and days

A 4.2-magnitude earthquake struck 4 km (2 mi) west-southwest of South Hutchinson (Kansas state) around 07:59 (local time) on Friday, August 16, causing minor damages in the Reno county towns of Hutchinson and South Hutchinson; no casualties were immediately reported. Three aftershocks struck the area on Friday morning following the 4.2-magnitude earthquake.

Further aftershocks are possible in the region over the coming hours and days.  


Individuals in the affected area are advised to monitor the situation and prepare for aftershocks.

In the event of aftershocks, individuals are advised to protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g. under a table), move away from the windows, and not attempt to leave a building unless there is an immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from tall buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
