Event

A vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) attack killed one security forces member and wounded two others in Qamishli (Hasakah province) on Sunday, August 18. The Islamic State (IS) group claimed responsibility for the attack, which reportedly targeted a training facility guarded by Asayish members.

Similar IS attacks targeting security forces are possible in northeastern Syria over the near term.

Context

To date, the Syrian conflict involves many parties, including the Syrian government, the Russian government, the Iranian government, the Turkish government, a US-led coalition, and numerous armed groups on the ground (including the Islamic State) with competing goals.
