Event

The McKinley wildfire in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough has caused mandatory resident evacuations in a five-mile range of the fire along the George Parks Highway on Sunday, August 18. Strong winds have allowed the fire to spread from the east side of the Highway to the west at 18:00 (local time), causing partial closures. The highway, between mile markers 71 and 98, is expected to remain closed until at least the early morning of Monday, August 19, though may change based on firefighting developments. Authorities have asked all residents to avoid the area.

Firefighters have been mobilized to put out this and other fires, as a total of six wildfires have been reported in the area.

Alternate routes should be sought due to road closures.

Advice

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor developments, avoid the vicinity of the wildfire, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
