Event

Authorities have reopened one lane of the George Parks Highway in Matanuska-Susitna Borough, with traffic only allowed to pass with a pilot car escort between mile markers 71 and 99. Traffic is therefore moving slowly, and significant delays should be expected. Authorities advise to use alternate routes due to hours-long delays and the possibility of the road's sudden closure should conditions worsen.

Firefighting operations to put out the McKinley fire remain underway. An estimated 50 structures have been lost in the fire.

Context

The McKinley wildfire caused mandatory resident evacuations in a five-mile range of the fire along the George Parks Highway on August 18. Strong winds prompted the fire to spread from the east side of the Highway to the west, causing partial closures. The highway, between mile markers 71 and 98, was therefore closed.

Advice

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor developments, avoid the vicinity of the wildfire, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
