Residents of Maptela in Soweto have reportedly blocked Manotsi Street, the main road leading to the township, as of Wednesday, August 21, to denounce electricity shortages. Protesters reportedly erected roadblocks with burning tires. 

Associated transportation disruptions and a heightened security presence are expected in Soweto over the coming hours. 


Individuals in Soweto are advised to monitor the situation, avoid all public demonstrations as a precaution, and anticipate localized transportation disruptions near all protests, and seek alternate routes.
