At least five people were killed and more than 30 others injured on Thursday, August 22, during a sudden thunderstorm over the Tatra mountains in southern Poland and neighboring Slovakia. Four of the fatalities occurred at the summit of Mount Giewont, where lightning struck a metal cross, resulting in four fatalities. On the Slovakian side of the mountain range, a fifth tourist was killed when a lightning strike knocked him into a gorge. Rescuers with the Polish Tatra emergency service (TOPR) were dispatched to the scene to aid the victims.
Individuals in the affected area are advised to monitor local weather reports, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, and anticipate transportation disruptions, including traffic congestion, limited visibility, and other adverse driving conditions.
