New York City police officers closed the Upper Level of the George Washington Bridge to all traffic at approximately 22:00 (local time) on Thursday, August 22, to investigate a suspicious device. Traffic on the Lower Level was also temporarily suspended on the Lower Level but was allowed to resume around 22:45. A heavy police presence has been reported on the bridge as of 23:00 and a bomb squad has been deployed to investigate the object. Significant traffic disruptions between Fort Lee (New Jersey) and New York City are ongoing in the area.
