Brazil: Climate activists to protest in several cities beginning August 23

Climate activist groups across Brazil plan to protest inaction to control the ongoing Amazon fires beginning on August 23; heightened security measures expected

Climate activist groups are scheduled to hold over 40 demonstrations to call on the Brazilian government to increase efforts to control and prevent wildfires in the across the country beginning on Friday, August 23.

In São Paulo, protests will take place at the Museum of Art of São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand at 18:00 (local time).

In Rio de Janeiro, protests will take place at the Cinelandia at 17:00 and on Sunday, August 25 at the Ipanema Beach at 14:00.

In Brasilia, protests will take place at the central bus station at 17:00 and will proceed to the Ministry of Environment.

Similar demonstrations are planned across the country on August 23, as well as on Saturday, August 24, and on Sunday, August 25.

A heightened security presence and associated transportation disruptions are to be expected at and around the protests.


Wildfires have been burning in the Amazon for several days as of August 23, though some estimates indicate that more than 9500 fires are ongoing in the region. Smog due to the wildfires was reported in São Paulo on August 19 after a combination of smoke, clouds, and a cold front steered the smoke into the city.


Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all demonstration areas as a precaution, anticipate transportation and business disruptions and a heightened security presence, and obey instructions issued by the local authorities.
