Switzerland: “Yellow vest” march scheduled in Ferney-Voltaire and Geneva August 31

Switzerland News Alert

“Yellow Vest” activists to protest near French border and in Geneva on August 31; heightened security presence and transportation disruptions expected

TIMEFRAME expected from 8/26/2019, 12:00 AM until 9/1/2019, 11:59 PM (Europe/Zurich). COUNTRY/REGION Ferney-Voltaire, Geneva

Event

"Yellow Vest" activists in Switzerland have called for a march from Ferney-Voltaire to Geneva on Saturday, August 31, to denounce police violence during previous related protests held in France. Protesters plan to gather at 09:00 (local time) at a roundabout in France located near the border with Switzerland and march towards the border in Ferney-Voltaire, before heading to the UN headquarters at Place des Nations in Geneva. Associated "drive slow" demonstrations are scheduled along the march route.

A heightened security presence is anticipated near all protests. Localized transportation and business disruptions are likely along the march route, and clashes between security forces and protesters cannot be ruled out.

Context

The "yellow vest" movement began in France on November 17, 2018, to protest rising fuel prices and a planned fuel tax. It has since grown to encompass a number of popular grievances against the French government. Some protests have turned violent and acts of vandalism and looting have been reported, although the scale of the protests has diminished since their height in December. Related "yellow vest" protests have later spread to various countries, including Switzerland and Belgium.

Advice

Individuals in Switzerland are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all protests due to the risk of violence, budget extra time to reach their destinations if traveling through areas affected by demonstrations, and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities.
