Tropical Storm Podul has weakened to a tropical depression after making landfall in Hà Tĩnh province during the early morning hours (local time) of Friday, August 30. The storm brought strong winds and high waves to coastal areas from Thanh Hoá to Quảng Trị. Heavy rainfall warnings also remain in effect in central provinces as Podul continues to move west towards Laos. There is a high risk of flash floods and landslides in low-lying and urban areas of Hà Tĩnh province through Friday, particularly in the districts of Huong Son, Huong Khe, and Vu Quang. However, as of 08:00 no significant damages have been reported from the storm. Associated transportation and business disruptions are anticipated in the event of localized flooding or landslides.
Tropical cyclones and typhoons are common in the western Pacific and the South China Sea from June through November.
Individuals in areas forecast to be affected by the storm are advised to monitor local weather reports, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, anticipate adverse weather and power and transportation disruptions, and remember that running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) is enough to knock over an adult - and never drive through flooded streets; floodwater may also contain wastewater and chemical products.
