A knife-wielding assailant stabbed and killed one person and wounded eight others around the Laurent Bonnevay metro stop in Villeurbanne, outside Lyon, on Saturday, August 31. The attack reportedly took place around 16:30 (local time); the assailant was arrested following the attack. An unspecified source close to police indicated that an earlier search for a suspected second assailant was no longer being pursued. Police did not immediately open a terror investigation into the incident and the motive for the attack was not immediately reported.
A heightened security presence and localized transportation disruptions are to be expected in the area over the coming hours.
