Nigeria: Protests in Abuja September 2

Nigeria News Alert

Protests in Abuja on September 2; heightened security expected and clashes possible

TIMEFRAME expected from 9/2/2019, 12:00 AM until 9/4/2019, 11:59 PM (Africa/Lagos). COUNTRY/REGION Abuja

Event

Protesters have gathered in front of the British High Comission in Abuja on the morning (local time) of Monday, September 2, to denounce a recent USD9 billion arbitral award against Nigeria by a UK court. Protesters then marched towards the Embassy of Ireland to continue protesting.

A heightened security presence and localized traffic disruptions are to be expected in the vicinity of the protest. Further protests are possible in the coming days.

Advice

Individuals in Abuja avoid all protests due to the risk of violence, and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities.

The security environment in Nigeria is complex and is particularly challenging in the northeast and extreme south of the country due to the presence of armed groups, high crime rates, and the risk of kidnapping. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel to such areas.
