A wave of wildfires that has raged across the northwestern region of Galicia since Thursday, September 5, has forced the evacuation of several villages as of Friday, September 6. Multiple fires have broken out in Galicia in recent days amid gale-force winds and high temperatures, destroying over 500 hectares of forest thus far. As of Friday, fires in the municipalities of Barbantes and Monforte de Lemos have been stabilized but another two, in Fisterra and Porto do Son, remained active.
Although firefighters are attempting to contain the blazes, further spread of wildfires is possible over the coming hours and days. Localized transportation disruptions are to be expected near the fires.
Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor developments, avoid the vicinity of the blazes, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities (e.g. evacuation orders).
